Founded in 1885 upon the marriage of Edouard Langlois and Jeanne Chateau, Langlois has been specialising in the wines of the Loire for more than 130 years, driven by an uncompromising pursuit of quality. In 1973 the Bollinger Group took ownership – they were won over by the unique heritage and terroir and consequently invested heavily in the vineyards and cellars, imparting further expertise of Traditional Method production.
In a nutshell: Since its establishment on the banks of the River Loire in Saumur, Maison Langlois has been producing quality Crémant with natural elegance, placing emphasis on extreme rigour and attention to detail. Thanks to their intricate knowledge of the exceptional Loire terroirs, and their craftsmanship humbly honed over decades, the House’s team crafts wines with finesse and a sense of place.
Crémant is the core focus for Langlois and they strive to go beyond the regulation requirements for production. The estate commits to selecting its grapes from four terroirs well known for their quality, with each terroir being vinified separately with the utmost care. Gentle pressing is performed for a few hours, separating the cuvees from the tailles. Reserve wine is used for their Brut Réserve NV, and the wine is aged for a minimum of 24 months, 5 years for the Cadence cuvée. In 2024 Langlois are introducing new branding for its Crémants, inspired by the colours of the Loire landscape.
Alongside its production of sparkling wines, Langlois also produces still wines from its Clos Saint Florent vineyards with the same dedication. The wines are elegant, expressive with incomparable purity.
The Terroir: The House currently tends to 62 hectares around Saumur and drawing upon its ancestral winemaking experience, it adapts to the specificity of each terroir. In Saumur the grapes grow on mainly clay/chalk soils and in Saumur-Champigny it is predominantly limestone and chalk.
Forever committed to nature, Langlois places CSR at the heart of its philosophy. The House was one of the first in France to receive the sustainability certification by adhering to the Terra Vitis specifications since 2000. Furthermore since 2020 they have converted 32 hectares over to certified organic agriculture, with the remaining 30 hectares in the process of conversion. Finally, Langlois dedicates the same amount of commitment and energy into supporting their partner winegrowers through their conversion to organic as well.
The Langlois ‘personality’: Langlois has two pillars of excellence: Chenin Blanc, the beating heart of the Langlois style; and the Art of Simplicity – their wish is to elevate the everyday occasion into something quite special with wines of great purity, class and distinction.
